Professional Development: Our Love

We love to work with teachers of all levels and experiences with Reading, Writing, and Instructional Strategies. Are you in need of some assistance or would you like us to present in your district or area? We have many varied offerings available, and we can also develop a custom PD based on your specific needs. Please contact us to see how we can inform and energize your literacy practices.

Be an A.C.T.I.V.E Reader

Students need active reading strategies to be able to think about and process the information they are reading at all levels. Through the reading of children's literature and building on comprehension tools and the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS), participants will be introduced to an acronym for students to learn to remember active comprehension strategies while reading. They will create a hands-on, visual flip book that can be taught and used at the elementary level, the secondary level, and the university level in multiple content areas. Participants will leave the workshop with resources and strategies to immediately and easily implement in class.

Are You on F.I.R.E. (Fostering Independent Reading Effectively)?

Allowing students time to read independently during the school day and providing various reading materials in the classroom are options that some school districts consider to improve motivation to read, and in turn, to improve reading achievement.

Research has shown time and again that the majority of students do not want to read and that motivation to read steadily decreases as children grow. Other studies have proven that students who read more have higher reading achievement than those students who read less. So, if teachers and parents can get kids motivated to read more, reading achievement will sky-rocket.

In this session we will interactively share practical, research-based practices (book talks, read alouds, etc) designed to engage and motivate students to read, thereby raising their achievement.

Professional Book Studies

We have designed, led, and implemented professional book studies on a variety of literacy topics.  Our book study formats are engaging, interesting, innovative, and relevant ways for educators to delve more deeply into literacy topics and best practices. These book studies include (but are not limited to) The Next Step in Guided Reading by Jan Richardson, Time to Write by Robin Johnson, The Book Whisperer and Reading in the Wild by Donalyn Miller, and When Kids Can’t Read: What Teachers Can Do by Kylene Beers.

We hope you will contact us for our materials, to lead your group, or to design a custom professional book study series tailored to your campus or individual needs.
